Controversial blogger arrested for calls of religious tolerance

Liberal blogger Ismail Khilath Rasheed was arrested last night for advocating religious tolerance.

Speaking at a press conference police Chief Daniel Stevens said, "We don't really know why we arrested him. Obviously we cannot charge him with calling for tolerance because that's just silly." Chief Stevens was fired on the spot.

Newly appointed Chief Ibn Ibn told reporters that Rasheed was charged with being disliked by the Islamic Ministry, a capital offence in the small island nation. State Islamic Minister Mode was unavailable for comment, but his office confirmed that they hated Rasheed.

Rasheed and a small group of thinking humans, a very rare breed in the Maldives,  recently came under scrutiny when they organised a silent protest whispering calls for religious freedom and tolerance. The protest was cut short when a group of angry monkeys attacked the peaceful activists. This led to the discovery of monkeys in Maldives.

So far it is unknown where these monkeys came from or why they targeted the activists. "Maybe they were hungry or something," said a student zoologist who had once skimmed through the wikipedia page on monkeys. "You know, like the way children get cranky when they're hungry or sleepy." She wished to remain anonymous for fear of backlash from the monkeys.

Experts say we can expect more free speech activists to get arrested, maybe even incarcerated like the old days, so long as Maldives pretends to be a democracy.

LOL, but really how do we reconcile living in 21st century, reaping every benefit of modern technology and refuse the basic understanding of human rights and social progress? what are we maldivians?

@ anonymous - Good point about reaping benefits of modern technology, and shunning everything else from science.

@ amira - That's exactly how I feel. I like to take Maldivians' craziness with a sense of humor. Hilath is a friend of miine and I was actually very pissed off when I wrote this.
